Today is the day I never want to forget. It started with howling winds and pouring rain. I was warm and snuggly when my newly eight year old bounced on my bed.
Shelton’s been planning this day for weeks. Church then breakfast at the Waffle House, lunch of rice and beans, followed by dinner of steak and orange potatoes. The activities planned included hiking the LU, walking the dog, watching Hallmark Christmas movies, making cupcakes for her class and reading her new books.
If you’ve followed me long at all you know we recently moved across the country where we had no family and few friends. I knew it was exactly where we were supposed to be. We jumped out in faith leaving the familiar for adventures in the East. New school, work, church, swim team, and way of life. We could not have transitioned any better. God has blessed us beyond measure. Shelton has blossomed into exactly who she is supposed to be. Her class has ten girls and nine boys. There are four second grade classes. Everything is bigger than she has ever experienced. Her swim team has as many swimmers as her last elementary school. Not once has Shelton backed down from anything. She moves to the beat of her heart and that’s exactly what I always want to remember. After we arrived within a few weeks, Shelton asked to be “bapatized” In fact for her eight birthday she asked for a big girl Bible and to be baptized.
We got ready for church with the addition of rain coats and boots. We arrived at church early to make sure we knew where to go. We knew our regular pastor would be out but Shelton said “ it doesn’t matter who baptizes me it just matters that I get baptized”. With faith like a child we followed our sweet eight year old. We all talked about our faith journey and how God guided our lives.
Scott as the spiritual leader of our family went first. Then Shelton. Then me. A celebration together. We are on this journey together following God’s will for our lives. While we do not know what the future holds we do know Who does.
Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. Hebrews 10:23
