I once heard the most biblical thing you could do is nap on the Sabbath. Come to me all who are weary and heavy laden and I will give you rest ( Matthew 11:28).
Others dive into reading and scriptures in quiet time. For us it’s church, family time, naps, and food on our Sabbath. Though I certainly have not mastered resting I know that the Lord is pleased with my attempts and knows what a challenge that truly is for me. He knows me better than I know myself. My mind runs faster than my body with things of the past, hopes for the future, and plans for the week ahead. As I write this I am reminded of the prayer I often pray and wrote in my dissertation by Thomas Merton:
My Lord God,
I have no idea where I am going.
I do not see the road ahead of me.
I cannot know for certain where it will end.
nor do I really know myself,
and the fact that I think I am following your will
does not mean that I am actually doing so.
But I believe that the desire to please you
does in fact please you.
And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing.
I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire.
And I know that if I do this you will lead me by the right road,
though I may know nothing about it.
Therefore will I trust you always though
I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death.
I will not fear, for you are ever with me,
and you will never leave me to face my perils alone.
I also answer lots of questions from my little one. After sharing my Lenten experiences when I was her age we started trying to replicate what I did as a child.
I found a color page that your child can color purple each day for the 40 days of Lent plus Sundays. Coloring a square purple is a really big deal in our house because coloring your calendar square purple at school signals outstanding behavior!
Since I could not find an updated Lenten mite box calendar I made one today inspired from my childhood and a few dated ones from an Internet search. This can be easily tailored to your family using a calendar program on your computer. Message me if you’d like me to email this word document calendar 📆.
Back to resting and cheesecake!
